The Sustainable Economies Law Center was recently featured in the East Bay Express, including an interview by Bernice Yeung with Janelle Orsi.

The Sustainable Economies Law Center (SELC) facilitates the growth of sustainable, localized, and just economies, through legal research, professional training, resource development, and education about practices such as:

· Cooperatives
· Community-supported enterprises
· Barter
· Sharing
· Local currencies
· Intentional communities, ecovillages, cohousing
· Affordable housing and limited equity housing
· Urban agriculture
· Community-based renewable energy
· Community land trusts
· Social enterprise
· Microlending
· Local investing
· Co-op banks/credit unions

In addition to creating and making available resources to the public, SELC provides training to legal professionals, student interns, and others, empowering them with tools to bring about more sustainable, localized, and just economies.  SELC also convenes special working groups, bringing together experts and practitioners from various fields, for the purpose of investigating, collecting resources for, and developing resources in specialized areas.

Based in Oakland, California, SELC is a fiscally sponsored project of Community Ventures, a California 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. All SELC projects are currently managed by volunteer attorneys.

I had been reading The Fifth Gospel, by Rudolf Steiner, in June. In this book I encountered an idea that I have entertained since then. According to Steiner, when the Christ was tempted by Ahriman, as the Ancient Persians knew the devil, and specifically the “turning stones into bread” temptation, Christ replied in the way we have been told. What was new here is that he says Ahriman answered something along these lines: “Yes, you are right, but no matter how right you are, human beings on earth need bread (money, sustenance) to stay alive”. Christ couldn’t fully answer this question, and in the end he had to face this question quite harshly, for his own life was sold for “bread”, the thirty silver coins of Judas. Well, what if human beings could live without money? Right now there is a huge movement that encourages swapping instead of buying or paying for services. They swap skills and services as well as goods. The latest issue of Yes! Magazine (Issue 55) is a single-theme one: resilience. Yes! explores this phenomena, and along with the book The Soul of Money, by Lynne Twist, has been a great inspiration for me. I have some ideas that I would like to discuss with you, if you are open or interested in this possibility. Best, Marleny.
